Starman Jones
Masterpiece of juvenile worldbuilding
Narrative Synopsis
Max Jones, a poor Ozark farm boy with an eidetic memory for mathematical tables, dreams of traveling to the stars but is locked out by hereditary astrogation guilds. Fleeing home, he uses dead uncle astrogation manuals to forge papers and joins the starship Asgard, only to become the crew's sole hope when the ship miscalculates an interstellar jump into uncharted space.
A book is a lever that lifts a man out of the mud, but only if he learns to read the numbers.
